YOUTH CLUB in conjunction with Doomed Gallery celebrates this website launch with ‘Time Has Creative Power’, a one-off talk by Gavin discussing his progression as a photographer and the powerful stories along the way that led to his iconic 35 year archive and books such as ‘Skins’ and ‘Raving ’89’. Working with The Photocopy Club, Gavin will produce a limited edition 40 page zine available for sale on the night.

If there’s not a rebellious youth culture, there’s no culture at all. It’s absolutely essential. It is the future. This is what we’re supposed to do as a species, is advance ideas.

PRESS RELEASE:

YOUTH CLUB is a non profit organisation working to preserve, share and celebrate youth culture history. Incorporating the PYMCA archive of over 300,000 youth culture images spanning 7 decades and a tapestry of subcultures, YOUTH CLUB is currently undergoing a vast preservation programme working to conserve outstanding youth culture photography.

The result of a 9 month digitisation project as part of YOUTH CLUB’s Preservation Programme proudly brings photographer Gavin Watson’s unseen archive of 20,000 iconic photos spanning over 35 years into the public eye with a dedicated website launch on Tuesday 6th March at www.gavinwatsonarchive.com.

A High Wycombe lad armed with a camera, Gavin began photographing his brother Neville in the early 80s, going on to unwittingly document one of the most misunderstood youth subcultures. Tender portraits and spirited adolescent friendships take us from the British Skinhead scene through a transition to 90s Rave Culture and on to Gavin’s contemporary work as a practicing photographer.

To celebrate the launch of Gavinwatsonarchive.com, YOUTH CLUB will be selling Limited Edition Signed C-Type Prints, Signed C-Type Prints Posters, T-Shirts and of course ‘Time Has Creative Power’ zine in conjunction with The Photocopy Club. Products will be for sale both on the night and online.
